Retail Assistant CV Example (New Zealand)

A Retail Assistant in a New Zealand hardware or trade store is hired by a department or store manager who needs someone on the floor who can find the right fitting for a plumber at seven in the morning, load a trailer safely at the yard and run a till on Saturday when the car park is full. The CV has to show product knowledge in a named department, the tickets that let you work in the yard, such as a forklift licence with the F endorsement, and the reliability a seven-day roster depends on. A sentence on your availability near the top does more than a paragraph about customer service.

The Sample CV below is for a Retail Assistant in East Auckland with three years across a hardware and building supplies store and a supermarket, working around a part-time NZ Certificate at a polytechnic. Its bullets are about the timber and hardware departments he has worked, the trade customers he serves on account, the yard and the forklift, the age-restricted sales checks at the supermarket and the stock, pricing and online click-and-collect work the store actually measures.

Tailor it to the retailer. A hardware store wants product knowledge, the yard and trade accounts; a supermarket wants speed at the checkout, replenishment and alcohol and tobacco compliance; a fashion or sports store wants fitting-room service, loss prevention and visual standards. The US counterpart of this page is the sales associate resume example, written for American stores where commission and upselling drive the page; a New Zealand Retail Assistant CV is one page of A4 with referees offered at the end, and the Brief template fits that shape.

Updated . The person and employers in this Sample CV are fictional. Written for applicants in New Zealand; the page for applicants in the US is the sales associate resume example.

How a New Zealand CV differs

A New Zealand Retail Assistant CV is one page, read by a store or department manager who is building a roster, and it ends with referees offered rather than left out. Most chains take applications through their careers site or a job board with a short form, and a trial shift or a 90-day trial period often follows the interview, so the CV's job is to earn that shift. The page carries availability, the department or product area you know, any tickets such as a forklift endorsement or a first aid certificate, NCEA or an NZ Certificate in Retail, and a line that says you have the right to work in New Zealand.

For a retail assistant in New Zealand

  1. Availability and the roster

Write the days and hours you can work and whether that includes Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Retail rosters in New Zealand are built a fortnight ahead by day, and a manager fills the gaps with the applicant whose availability matches.

  2. Tickets and endorsements

A forklift operator certificate with the F endorsement, a first aid certificate or a Site Safe card belongs near the top of a hardware or trade store CV. They are the difference between being allowed in the yard on day one and waiting weeks for a course.

  3. Right to work and the 90-day trial

State that you are a New Zealand citizen or resident or hold a visa with work rights, because the employer must check before offering a role. Many small retailers use a 90-day trial period for new staff, and saying you are happy to start on one removes a question.

  4. NCEA and the NZ Certificate in Retail

List your NCEA level with any endorsement and the subjects a shop cares about. The New Zealand Certificate in Retail at Level 2 or 3, often done through a retail apprenticeship, is the recognised qualification and worth listing even while it is in progress.

  5. Referees from a manager

Two referees, usually a current or previous manager and a tutor or coach for a first job, listed at the end or offered on request. New Zealand employers ring referees before an offer, so check they are expecting the call.

Every CV in New Zealand

A4 paper
New Zealand prints on A4. Set the page size before you export; a Letter-sized PDF is the usual sign of a US template.
Two pages is normal
Two pages is the norm. One page for a first job; a third page only for a long senior career.
No photo
No photo, date of birth or marital status. New Zealand employers do not expect them and most prefer the CV without them.
Dates as DD/MM/YYYY
Day first where a full date appears, and month and year for each role. Never the US month-first order.
New Zealand English
New Zealand English follows British spelling: organise, programme, centre, licence, specialise.
Suburb and city, not a street address
"Mount Eden, Auckland" is enough on the contact line. A full street address is not expected.

How the CV changes with experience

The same retail assistant CV, written at three levels: a profile and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first post in the title

Year 13 leaver looking for a first Retail Assistant role, with Gateway work experience in a sports store and three seasons coaching junior rugby league on Saturday mornings.

  • Spent two days a week for a term on Gateway placement in a sports store, serving customers, pricing stock and helping with the Christmas layout.
  • Coached an under-nines rugby league team for three seasons, which meant turning up every Saturday and dealing with parents calmly.
  • Available for weekend, evening and holiday shifts and happy to start on a 90-day trial.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Retail Assistant with four years in a large sports and outdoor store, now a senior team member who runs the footwear department and trains new starters on the floor.

  • Own the footwear wall, including the weekly stock count, the clearance markdowns and the fit service that drives the department's returns rate down.
  • Train each new team member on the till, the loyalty programme and the store's loss prevention routine.
  • Open the store two mornings a week and close on Thursdays when the duty manager is off.

Senior

Eight years or more, leads people, budgets or programmes

Department Manager in a large-format hardware store, responsible for the paint and decorating department, its team of five and its sales and shrink results.

  • Run the paint department's roster, ordering and promotional changeovers for a store trading seven days.
  • Brought the department's stock loss at the annual stocktake to the lowest in the store by tightening the tint-and-return process.
  • Act as duty manager across the whole store on Sundays, including opening, cash and incident reports.

Skills to put on the retail assistant CV

Hard skills

Product knowledge in a named department
A trade customer in a hardware store or a parent in a sports store asks a question and expects an answer, and a manager hires the applicant who can name what they know.
Forklift licence and F endorsement
Any store with a yard needs licensed forklift drivers on every shift, and holding the endorsement already moves your CV to the top of a hardware store's pile.
Checkout and cash handling
Even a yard-focused store puts everyone on a till at Christmas, and a clean cash record is the thing a referee is asked about.
Age-restricted sales checks
Supermarkets and liquor sections are tested by controlled purchase operations, and a failed one costs the store its licence, so managers want to see you check identification without being told.
Stock counts and shelf tickets
Pricing accuracy is audited and stock accuracy decides whether online orders can be filled, and both come down to the retail assistant who keeps the aisle right.
Click-and-collect and online picking
Most New Zealand retailers now fill online orders from the shop floor, and picking to a time promise is a skill they can use from the first shift.
Health and safety on the floor
The Health and Safety at Work Act puts duties on every worker, and a store manager wants a team member who follows the safe operating procedures for saws, ladders and the yard.

Soft skills

Turning up
A seven-day roster falls over when someone does not show, and reliability is the quality every retail referee is asked about first.
Straight talking with trade customers
Builders want a quick, honest answer about what is in stock and when the rest arrives, and they come back to the assistant who gives it.
Working in a mixed team
A New Zealand store floor is students, parents working school hours and long-serving full-timers, and getting on with all of them is noticed.
Keeping calm on a busy Saturday
The car park is full, the saw queue is long and someone is unhappy about a price; the assistant who stays even-tempered is the one asked to stay on.

Mistakes that cost retail assistant interviews

  1. A page about customer service and nothing else

Every applicant writes that they are good with customers. Name the department, the products, the trade customers, the till system and the yard, and let the manager see where you would fit on the floor.

  2. Hiding the tickets

A forklift endorsement buried at the bottom of page two is missed. Put it in the headline for a hardware, trade or garden store, and keep first aid and any safety card beside it.

  3. No availability

A manager cannot roster what they do not know. If the CV does not say you can work Saturdays, the manager assumes you cannot and hires the applicant who said so.

  4. Leaving out age-restricted sales

Supermarkets, bottle stores and convenience stores run on identification checks, and a controlled purchase operation failure costs them dearly. Say that you check identification and refuse sales, and that your record is clean.

  5. Writing an American sales associate page

Commission targets, upselling scripts and a Letter-sized page belong to the US example this one pairs with. A New Zealand Retail Assistant CV is one page of A4 with referees, written about products, the roster and the yard.

Write bullets with the XYZ formula: what changed, the number that shows it, and how you did it, in one line.

Questions about the retail assistant CV

What should a Retail Assistant CV include in New Zealand?

Your availability by day, the stores and departments you have worked in, any forklift, first aid or safety tickets, your NCEA level or an NZ Certificate in Retail, a line confirming your right to work and two referees. One page of A4 is the expected length for a floor role.

Do I need a forklift licence to work in a hardware store?

Not for every role, but a store with a yard needs licensed drivers on each shift, and an applicant who already holds the forklift operator certificate and the F endorsement is hired ahead of one who needs training. A one-day course gets the certificate; the endorsement goes on your driver licence afterwards.

How do I write a Retail Assistant CV with no experience?

Lead with your availability, then your Gateway or work experience placements, sport, volunteering or a family business, with one line on what each taught you about customers, cash or turning up on time. Add your NCEA level and any first aid certificate, and offer a teacher or coach as a referee.

Should I mention the 90-day trial period?

You can. Smaller employers use it, and saying you are happy to start on a trial shows confidence and removes a question from the interview. Larger chains tend not to use it, so leave the line out when applying to one.

Is one page enough for a Retail Assistant CV in New Zealand?

One page of A4. A senior team member or department manager with several stores may run to two, but a floor role is read in under a minute on a phone and the manager wants availability, experience, tickets and referees on one screen.

How do I tailor my CV to a different retailer?

Change the headline to the advert's title and move the matching department to the top of your current job: timber for a hardware store, checkouts for a supermarket, footwear for a sports store. Resume Master rewrites the CV around the advert when you paste it in, keeping it to one page and in the order a New Zealand manager reads.
