Business Analyst Resume Example

Business analysts sit between the people who need something and the people who build it. Hiring managers read a business analyst resume looking for evidence that you can find the real requirement behind a request, document it clearly, and see it through to a change people actually adopt. Tools matter, but they come second to that bridge-building.

The Sample resume below is for a business analyst with six years in insurance and healthcare administration. Each bullet names a process or system, the analysis you did and the result: hours saved, errors avoided, a system launched with fewer defects, a decision made with better data.

Business analyst roles lean in different directions. IT-focused roles want requirements, user stories, testing and systems knowledge; process-focused roles want mapping, improvement and change management; data-heavy roles want SQL and reporting. Mirror the posting's verbs and tools. If your work has been mostly dashboards and queries, the data analyst example may describe you better.

How the resume changes with experience

The same business analyst resume, written at three levels: a summary and three bullets for each.

Entry level

Zero to two years, or a first role in the title

Junior business analyst with an information systems degree and an internship writing requirements for an internal tool. Organized, curious and good at asking the next question.

  • Interviewed eight staff to document how expense approvals worked before a system change.
  • Wrote requirements and test cases for a small internal request form.

Mid level

Three to seven years, owns a process or a workload

Skills to put on the business analyst resume

Hard skills

Requirements elicitation and documentation
This is the core deliverable of the role, and hiring managers often ask for a writing sample.
Process mapping
Seeing a process clearly is the first step to improving it, and maps are concrete proof of your work.
User acceptance testing
Testing makes sure what was built matches what was needed, and it reduces costly defects after launch.
SQL and Excel
Analysts who can pull and check their own data make stronger recommendations and move faster.
Agile artifacts such as user stories
Many IT teams work in sprints, and well-written stories keep development on track.
Tools such as Jira, Confluence and Visio
Postings name them, and matching helps you through tracking systems.

Soft skills

Facilitation
Workshops that end in clear decisions are one of the most valuable things a business analyst provides.
Asking good questions
The first request is rarely the real need, and uncovering it saves projects from building the wrong thing.
Translating between business and technical teams
Clear translation prevents misunderstandings that cost time and money.

Mistakes that cost business analyst interviews

  1. Listing documents instead of outcomes

Wrote requirements documents describes the task. Add what the documents enabled: a system launched on time, fewer defects, a process that runs faster.

  2. Being vague about the domain

Claims, lending, patient billing or supply chain each have their own vocabulary. Naming your domain helps employers in the same field trust you sooner.

  3. Overloading the skills section

A list of every modeling notation and tool dilutes the important ones. Keep the skills the posting asks for and that your bullets demonstrate.

  4. Forgetting the people side

Business analysts win or lose on stakeholder relationships. Show a conflict you resolved or a group you brought to agreement.

  5. No numbers

Process work can be measured: time saved, steps removed, errors reduced, adoption rates. Include at least one number per role.

Questions about the business analyst resume

What skills should a business analyst list on a resume?

Requirements elicitation, process mapping, user acceptance testing, SQL or Excel, and the tools in the posting. Add facilitation and stakeholder management, shown through your bullets.

Are business analysis certifications worth it?

They help, especially for roles at large organizations. The ECBA, CCBA and CBAP from the IIBA are recognized; list the one you hold with the year.

How do I move into business analysis from another role?

Show analysis you already do: documenting processes, gathering requests for a system change, testing new tools or improving reports. Present those as requirements and process work.

Should a business analyst resume include technical skills?

Yes, where they are used in the role, such as SQL, data modeling or knowledge of a specific platform. IT business analyst roles value technical depth more than process-focused ones.

How long should a business analyst resume be?

One page for up to about seven years of experience, and two pages for senior analysts who have led major programs.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
