Nursing Student Resume Example

A nursing student resume has one job: convince a nurse recruiter or a program coordinator that you are safe, teachable and close to licensed. Lead with your degree and expected graduation, your NCLEX date or authorization to test, your BLS, and then your clinical rotations by unit and hours, because those are the only clinical credentials you have so far.

The Sample resume below is for a final-year BSN student in Kentucky applying to new graduate residency programs while working as a patient care technician. It shows clinical rotations as their own section, a summer nurse externship with real patient numbers, and the paid patient care work that recruiters treat as proof you can handle a floor.

Skills to put on the nursing student resume

Hard skills

Clinical rotations by unit and hours
They are your clinical record, and recruiters match rotation units to the openings they have.
BLS and other certifications
Every hospital requires BLS, and holding it before you apply removes one step from your hire.
Assessment and documentation
Residency programs want new nurses who can already chart accurately and notice change.
Electronic health record experience
Naming the system from your rotations or your technician job tells a recruiter you will not need extra training.
Patient care technician or CNA skills
Paid bedside work shows stamina and comfort with patients that a rotation alone cannot.
Medication math and safety
Program coordinators ask about it because dosage errors are the most common new graduate mistake.

Soft skills

Asking for help
Managers would rather hire a new nurse who speaks up than one who guesses, and they screen for it.
Reliability
Residency programs lose money when new nurses leave, so proof that you show up and stay matters.
Communication with patients and families
Patient experience is tracked from the first shift, and teach-back and SBAR show you have practiced it.
Time management under load
Balancing school, clinicals and work is the closest thing to a twelve-hour shift, and it belongs on the page.

Mistakes that cost nursing student interviews

  1. Leaving out clinical rotations

    Rotations are your experience. List each unit with the hospital type and the hours, and note the capstone or practicum unit separately, since that is where you carried a real assignment.

  2. Hiding the graduation and NCLEX dates

    Recruiters plan start dates around them. Put the expected graduation month, your NCLEX date or your authorization to test in the headline or the first line of education.

  3. A resume that reads like a class list

    Course names such as Pathophysiology tell a manager nothing they do not already assume. Use the space for what you did with patients and what happened.

  4. Dismissing non-nursing jobs

    Restaurant, retail and caregiving work show stamina, customer service and reliability. Keep one or two of them with a short bullet each on what transfers.

  5. A generic objective

    Seeking a position to grow my skills wastes the first lines. State the unit or program you are applying to, your graduation date and your strongest relevant experience.

  6. Forgetting the GPA and honors when they help

    A GPA above about 3.5, a dean's list or a nursing honor society membership give a coordinator a reason to rank you higher. Leave the GPA off if it would not help.

Questions about the nursing student resume

How do I write a nursing student resume with no experience?

Treat your rotations as experience. List each unit with hours and the skills you performed, add your BLS and any CNA certification, and include volunteer or part-time work with a line on what it taught you about patients or teamwork.

Should I list clinical rotations under experience or education?

Give them their own section labeled Clinical Experience placed right after the summary. Paid work such as a technician or CNA job goes under Work Experience below it.

Where does the expected graduation date go?

In the education entry with the month and year, and again in the headline, such as BSN Candidate, May 2026. Recruiters for residency programs sort applicants by it.

Can I put my NCLEX on the resume before I take it?

Yes. Write NCLEX-RN scheduled with the month, or Authorization to Test received, so the reader knows when you will be licensed. Update it to your license number the day you pass.

Should a new graduate nurse resume be one page?

Yes. One page with clinical rotations, work experience, certifications and education is what residency coordinators expect. Cut coursework and older jobs before you spill onto a second page.

How do I describe a nurse externship?

List it as a job with the unit, the hours and the preceptor model, then bullets on the skills you performed under supervision and anything you contributed, such as a teaching session or a project.
