Finance managers read an analyst resume from the top down, looking for three things: the size of the numbers you have worked with, the processes you own (budget, forecast, close support, business cases, valuation), and at least one decision your analysis changed. This template puts Experience directly after a short summary, with bullet slots that ask for each of those.

Education and certifications come next, ahead of skills. Finance hiring still weighs the degree and, for investment and credit roles, CFA progress, so both stay on the first page. The skills block sits last because advanced Excel is assumed in every finance posting; what the reader needs from it is the planning and ERP systems you know, plus SQL or Python if you use them.

Write in the posting's vocabulary: FP&A, variance, run rate, NPV, credit memo. Replace each bracketed prompt and delete slots that do not apply to your track. A finished page in this layout is the financial analyst resume example.

How to fill in each section

  1. Summary: track, scale, one decision

Name your track in the opening words, because FP&A, investment and credit analysts are hired from different pools. Add scale: the revenue or expense base you cover, or the portfolio size. Then give one analysis that moved a decision, in plain business terms: a price approved, an investment declined, a cost cut. Keep the last sentence for the skills the posting stresses. Two or three sentences in total; finance readers prefer brevity.

  2. Experience: ownership, accuracy, decisions

Start each role with what you own and its size, since a reader needs to know whether you forecast a department or a division. Forecast accuracy is one of the few clean results in finance, so give it with a time span. Model bullets should name the model type and the decision it fed. Savings found through variance or spend reviews count, as long as something was done about them. Automating monthly reporting is worth a line, with hours or days saved.

  3. Education: degree, school, graduate study

List the degree, school and year. Finance, accounting and economics degrees need no explanation; with another major, the experience above carries the argument. An MBA or master's in finance belongs on its own line. New graduates can add a strong GPA, relevant coursework in valuation or accounting, and case competitions; drop those once you have two years in a finance role.

  4. Certifications and Exams: exact status

Give the precise status: CFA Level II candidate, sitting in a named month, is far more useful than CFA program. Investment and research roles weigh the CFA heavily; FP&A teams care more about experience, though the charter still signals strong technical grounding. A CPA belongs here for analysts coming from accounting. Planning-system certifications help when the posting names the system. Remove the section if you hold nothing current.

  5. Skills: systems over software basics

Every finance candidate claims advanced Excel, so make this block about what sets you apart: the modeling methods you use, the planning and ERP systems you have worked in, and any data tools. Name systems exactly as the posting does, since finance teams screen for the platform they already run. SQL and Python are useful for analysts who pull their own data; list them only if you have used them at work.

Questions about the financial analyst resume template

Why is the skills section last on this template?

Finance managers assume spreadsheet skill and read experience first to see what you used it for. Placing systems and methods at the end keeps them available for anyone matching keywords while letting your budgets, forecasts and decisions lead.

How do I show scale if my company is private?

Use ranges or relative sizes that do not reveal confidential figures: a business unit with revenue in the hundreds of millions, forty cost centers, a capital plan covering three plants. The reader needs to judge the level of the work, not see the exact numbers.

Should investment banking or private equity candidates use this template?

They can, but deal roles usually add a short transaction list with deal type, size and your role. Use this layout for corporate finance, FP&A and credit, and add deal lines inside Experience if you have a few.

How do I move from accounting into a financial analyst role?

Recast your accounting work toward the future: variance explanations you wrote for managers, budget support, accrual analysis that fed a forecast. Add one model you built yourself. The accountant resume example shows the backward-looking version of the same skills, which helps you see what to change.

Is it free?

Yes. The Word files and the Google Docs copy are free to download, edit and use for any application. There is no signup and no email.

Will it read correctly in an applicant tracking system?

The layout is one column with standard headings and real text: no tables, text boxes, icons, columns or images, which are the parts parsers most often misread. Keep it that way as you edit.

Word or Google Docs?

Use whichever you edit in. The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, Pages and LibreOffice. The Google Docs link asks you to make a copy in your own Drive; the original stays blank for the next person. Send the posting the format it asks for, usually .docx or PDF.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
