A nurse recruiter screening students has a short list of questions: when you graduate, when you test, which units you have worked on and whether you have cared for patients outside of school. This template answers them in that order. An objective names the unit you want, Education carries the graduation month, and Clinical Rotations sits directly underneath as its own section, with the hours for each unit.

Paid or volunteer patient care follows in Experience, because a semester as a tech or nursing assistant often decides who gets a new graduate interview. Skills come last, split into certifications, clinical skills you were checked off on, and charting. Every line is a prompt in brackets; replace it, or delete it if it does not apply to you.

The layout fits on one page for nearly every student. If you are short on rotations, give the job more detail; if you have no job yet, give each rotation two lines. For the same layout filled in by a final-year BSN student, read the nursing student resume example.

How to fill in each section

  1. Objective: the unit, the program and your hours

A student objective works when it reads like a fit for one posting rather than a wish. Give your program and graduation term, a number for your clinical hours and the unit of your capstone. Then name the role in the posting's own words: new graduate residency, nurse externship or nurse tech. Change that last clause for every application; a med-surg residency and a pediatric extern program should not get the same line.

  2. Education: graduation month and testing status up front

Put the expected month and year on the degree line, because residency programs hire by cohort and filter on it. Add your GPA only when it helps, with honors such as an honor society or the dean's list on the same line. If you hold an earlier degree in another field, list it second; it explains your path and can show useful experience. Leave prerequisite courses off unless the posting asks for them.

  3. Clinical Rotations: by relevance, with hours

Each line names the unit, the facility and the hours, then one thing you did yourself. Put the rotation closest to the posting first, which is usually your capstone. Recruiters compare your units with their own floor, so write the unit type instead of a course name such as Adult Health II. Three or four lines are enough; if your program had many short placements, group the rest into one line.

  4. Experience: paid work counts

Recruiters trust a student who has already worked shifts on a floor, so a CNA, tech or extern role goes here with patient numbers and the tasks you are cleared for. Jobs outside health care belong too when they show reliability: years with one employer, closing shifts, training new staff. Give your weekly hours if you worked during school; it tells the reader you can carry a schedule and a course load at once.

  5. Skills: what an instructor signed off on

Keep certifications apart from clinical skills, and list the skills your program checked you off on rather than every skill in the textbook. Add the charting system you used as a student, since it shortens orientation on units that run the same one. A second language matters on many units; give your real level. Leave soft skills out of this block and let the rotations and the job show them.

Questions about the nursing student resume template

How many clinical rotations should I list?

Three or four in full: your capstone and the rotations closest to the job. If your program had more, add one closing line such as Additional rotations: pediatrics, psychiatric, community health (N hours in total). Listing every placement in detail pushes your paid work and skills onto a second page.

Should I keep my CNA certification on the resume once I am close to graduating?

Yes, until you are licensed as a registered nurse. It shows you already hold a state credential, you have given direct care and you know how a floor runs. Once you pass the NCLEX, keep the job under Experience and drop the CNA line from your certifications.

Does this template work for a nurse externship application?

Yes. Externship programs want the same evidence as residencies, only earlier: your current semester, completed rotations and any patient care job. Write the objective for the externship unit, and give your current year in Education if the program asks for it. Switch to the registered nurse resume template once you are licensed.

Which layout should a new graduate nurse use?

One column, plain headings, one page. The Campus template keeps education and rotations near the top. Hospital application systems often copy your resume into their own fields, and columns or tables can scramble that, so keep them out.

Is it free?

Yes. The Word files and the Google Docs copy are free to download, edit and use for any application. There is no signup and no email.

Will it read correctly in an applicant tracking system?

The layout is one column with standard headings and real text: no tables, text boxes, icons, columns or images, which are the parts parsers most often misread. Keep it that way as you edit.

Word or Google Docs?

Use whichever you edit in. The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, Pages and LibreOffice. The Google Docs link asks you to make a copy in your own Drive; the original stays blank for the next person. Send the posting the format it asks for, usually .docx or PDF.
