Civil engineering firms and public agencies check licensure before anything else, because it decides whether you can seal drawings and what role you can be billed at. This template puts a Licenses and Registration block directly under the summary, with the state and year for each, so an EIT or a PE is visible in the first lines. Your credentials after your name in the header do the same job for anyone who stops there.

Experience comes next and is organized around projects. Each bullet slot asks for the project type, its size or construction value, your role on it (designer, project engineer, engineer of record) and an outcome a principal would care about: approval on first submittal, change orders avoided, schedule or budget held. Design software and codes follow in the skills block, then education.

Replace every bracket and remove slots that do not apply to your discipline. The completed version of this page is the civil engineer resume example.

How to fill in each section

  1. Summary: license, discipline, biggest role

Open with your license status and your discipline, since a stormwater group and a bridge group are not interchangeable hires. Next, name the largest project on which you held a defined role, with its value or size, so the reader can place your level. Close with two strengths that match the posting, such as hydrologic modeling and permitting, or roadway geometry and traffic control plans. Leave out general claims about being a team player; principals look for scope.

  2. Licenses and Registration: state, status, year

List the PE with the discipline and every state where you are licensed, most relevant first. EITs should give the state and year of certification and, if booked, the PE exam date, because firms plan billing roles around it. Add credentials that match the posting, such as Certified Floodplain Manager for water resources work or a state inspector card for construction roles. If a license by comity is pending, say so and give the expected month.

  3. Experience: project, scale, role, result

Write experience as projects, each with its type, size or value, and the role you held. Reviewers treat designer, project engineer and engineer of record as very different, so be exact. Results in civil work are concrete: permits on first submittal, bids under the engineer's estimate, change orders avoided, a schedule held through construction. Field time counts; submittal reviews, inspections and RFIs show you understand how designs get built. Public meetings deserve a bullet for agency roles.

  4. Skills: software, analysis tools, standards

Separate the drafting and design software from the analysis tools, and add a line for the codes and standards you design to. Agencies and DOT consultants often require a specific platform, MicroStation or Civil 3D, as a hard requirement, so name the one you use exactly. The codes line tells a reader you can produce work that passes their reviewers without heavy correction, which is what they are paying for.

  5. Education: accredited degree, then graduate work

Give the civil engineering degree, the school and the year, and note ABET accreditation if the posting or your state's licensing rules make it relevant. A master's degree in a specialty belongs on its own line. Recent graduates can add a capstone project with its sponsor and scope; experienced engineers should drop coursework and keep education to one or two lines at the bottom.

Questions about the civil engineer resume template

Should licensure really sit above experience?

For civil roles, yes. Whether you are an EIT or PE changes the roles you can be hired into and how a firm bills you. Putting it under the summary saves the reader a search, and the section is short enough not to push experience far down.

How do I list many small projects without filling two pages?

Group them: one bullet for a program of similar work, such as twelve sidewalk and curb ramp projects for a city over three years, with the total value. Keep separate bullets for the two or three projects that best match the posting.

Should I attach a separate project list?

Public agencies and some firms ask for one with qualification packages. Keep it as a separate page listing project name, client, value, your role and dates, and leave the resume itself focused on your strongest work.

How do I move from civil design into construction management?

Bring construction-phase work forward: submittal reviews, field inspections, RFIs, schedule and cost tracking. The project manager resume example shows how delivery and coordination read when they are the main job.

Is it free?

Yes. The Word files and the Google Docs copy are free to download, edit and use for any application. There is no signup and no email.

Will it read correctly in an applicant tracking system?

The layout is one column with standard headings and real text: no tables, text boxes, icons, columns or images, which are the parts parsers most often misread. Keep it that way as you edit.

Word or Google Docs?

Use whichever you edit in. The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, Pages and LibreOffice. The Google Docs link asks you to make a copy in your own Drive; the original stays blank for the next person. Send the posting the format it asks for, usually .docx or PDF.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
