Network teams screen on certifications and environment before anything else. A hiring manager wants to know whether you hold a CCNA, CCNP or a firewall vendor credential, and whether the networks you ran look like theirs: campus, branch, data center, service provider or cloud. This template answers both quickly. Certifications sit directly under the summary, and each role opens with a scale line before any project.

Experience comes ahead of the skills block here, unlike a typical developer layout, because network work is judged by what you kept running and what you changed without an outage. The skills block then groups protocols, vendor platforms and tooling for anyone checking against the posting. Education closes the page.

Each bullet slot asks for a count (sites, devices, users, circuits), a change, and the result: maintenance windows met, downtime avoided, tickets reduced. Replace each bracket with your own numbers. A completed version of this structure is the network engineer resume example.

How to fill in each section

  1. Summary: certification, environment, best project

Put your highest certification in the first clause and the type of network you run in the next, since an enterprise campus team and a carrier backbone team hire for different depth. Then one project with numbers: a refresh, a data center move, a firewall migration. Last, the direction you want, whether that is design, day-to-day operations or automation. Avoid generic phrases like troubleshooting expert; the scale line in your experience proves it better.

  2. Certifications: highest first, with years

Order by relevance to the posting, which usually means the vendor it runs first, then level. Give the full current name, for example CCNP Enterprise rather than CCNP, because the tracks changed and the reader may ask which one. Cisco certifications must be renewed every three years, so renew them or remove them. A booked exam is worth a line when you are moving from administrator to engineer. Keep vendor training courses without an exam off this list.

  3. Experience: scale line, then changes

Start each role with one bullet that describes the environment: sites, device counts, users, vendors, WAN type. Every later claim reads against it. Then give the projects that changed the network, each with its maintenance window and whether anything went down unplanned. Operations work belongs too, as measured results: uptime held, repair times shortened, ticket queues reduced. Mention change control and rollback plans; network managers care how you change things as much as what you changed.

  4. Skills: protocols you have run in production

Group the block into routing, switching and wireless; vendor platforms and security; and monitoring and automation. List only protocols you have configured on live equipment, because network interviews go deep on whatever you write. Put the posting's vendor first on the platform line, with the operating system where it matters. If you script, name the language and library; automation experience moves a network engineer into a different tier of roles.

  5. Education: a single line

Write the degree or diploma, school and year. Many network engineers enter through community college programs, military communications roles or help desk jobs, and certifications usually carry more weight than the degree. If you have no degree, you can fill the section with a technical program or remove it, and nothing will look missing as long as the certifications block is strong.

Questions about the network engineer resume template

Why does experience come before skills on this template?

Network managers want to see the environment you ran before they read a protocol list, and the scale line in each role tells them more than any keyword. The skills block still sits on the first page for anyone matching terms against the posting.

How do I show military or NOC experience?

Translate it into the same measures: number of sites or nodes supported, types of circuits, shifts covered, incidents handled and how quickly. Spell out military acronyms the first time. A NOC role counts as network experience, so describe the escalations and changes you handled, not only the monitoring.

Should I include cloud networking if I have only done a little?

Include it as one specific bullet, such as a site-to-site VPN to AWS or Azure that you built and maintain, rather than a skills keyword. Hybrid connectivity is a common ask in postings, and a concrete example signals you are ready to grow into it.

What if I am moving from network engineering into DevOps?

Lean on automation, scripting and any infrastructure as code you have written, and see the DevOps engineer resume template, which puts pipelines and cloud tooling in the foreground.

Is it free?

Yes. The Word files and the Google Docs copy are free to download, edit and use for any application. There is no signup and no email.

Will it read correctly in an applicant tracking system?

The layout is one column with standard headings and real text: no tables, text boxes, icons, columns or images, which are the parts parsers most often misread. Keep it that way as you edit.

Word or Google Docs?

Use whichever you edit in. The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, Pages and LibreOffice. The Google Docs link asks you to make a copy in your own Drive; the original stays blank for the next person. Send the posting the format it asks for, usually .docx or PDF.
