This template is laid out the way an engineering screen is read. A recruiter checks the languages and platforms against the posting in a few seconds, so the skills block sits directly under the summary instead of at the bottom. An engineer then reads the experience bullets looking for systems, decisions and numbers, so each bullet slot asks for those three things and nothing else.

Every line is a prompt in [square brackets]. Replace it with your own detail, delete the slots you cannot fill truthfully, and keep the headings as they are: plain words like Experience and Skills are what applicant tracking systems look for. The layout is a single column with no tables or text boxes, so the file parses cleanly when you upload it as .docx or export it to PDF.

The Projects section is optional. Keep it if you are early in your career, changing stacks, or have open-source work a reviewer can open; drop it once your paid work shows the same skills. To see every slot filled in by a realistic candidate, read the software engineer resume example.

How to fill in each section

  1. Summary: three lines, written for this posting

State your years, your area (backend, frontend, mobile, infrastructure) and your main language in the first sentence. The second sentence is the strength a former teammate would describe you by. The third names the problem the posting is hiring to solve. Rewrite this block for every application; it is the cheapest place to match the posting's wording.

  2. Skills: grouped, ordered, honest

Group skills on three lines rather than one long list, so a reader finds the cloud platform without scanning twenty words. Put the posting's languages first when they are true of you. Leave out anything you would not want to whiteboard: an interviewer will pick the least familiar item on the list. Spell names the way the posting does, Node.js not *Node*, PostgreSQL not *Postgres*, because a keyword search matches exact strings.

  3. Experience: system, change, number

Each bullet slot asks for the system you worked on, what you changed, and a measured result. Numbers do not have to be revenue: latency, uptime, deploy frequency, build minutes, incidents, pages per week, or the number of teams that adopted your library all count. Use your own part of a team effort, and say *led* or *built* only when it is true. Four bullets for the current role and two or three for the one before are enough for most engineers.

  4. Projects: only what a reviewer can open

List a project when it has a working link and shows something your jobs do not: a language you are moving into, a domain the posting cares about, or code you wrote alone. One line each, with the stack and a number if there is one. Remove the section once your experience covers the same ground; an empty or stale GitHub hurts more than no link.

  5. Education: one line, at the bottom

Degree, school and year on one line. Engineers with two or more years of work keep it short and last. If you came through a bootcamp or are self-taught, list the bootcamp or relevant courses here and let Projects carry the weight; most engineering postings now treat a degree as one option among several.

Questions about the software engineer resume template

Should a software engineer resume be one page?

One page fits most engineers with under eight to ten years of experience. Past that, a second page is fine when it holds recent, relevant work. Cut old internships and long tool lists before you cut results.

Why are skills above experience in this template?

Technical screens start by matching your stack to the posting. A short, grouped skills block near the top answers that question at once, so the reader reaches your experience already knowing you fit. Move it below experience if you are senior and your bullets name the stack anyway.

Should I add a GitHub or portfolio link to the header?

Add it next to your email when the profile shows recent code you would be happy to discuss. A profile with only forks or coursework from years ago adds nothing; leave it off and let the Projects section link to the one or two repositories that matter.

How do I use this template if I am applying for my first engineering job?

Move Projects above Experience and give it three or four entries. Use the experience slots for internships, teaching assistant work or any job where you wrote code or automated something, even outside a software company. The software engineering intern resume example shows the same structure filled in for a student.

Is it free?

Yes. The Word files and the Google Docs copy are free to download, edit and use for any application. There is no signup and no email.

Will it read correctly in an applicant tracking system?

The layout is one column with standard headings and real text: no tables, text boxes, icons, columns or images, which are the parts parsers most often misread. Keep it that way as you edit.

Word or Google Docs?

Use whichever you edit in. The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, Pages and LibreOffice. The Google Docs link asks you to make a copy in your own Drive; the original stays blank for the next person. Send the posting the format it asks for, usually .docx or PDF.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
