Whoever hires a bookkeeper, an owner or a small firm, first wants to know whether you can open their file and keep working tomorrow. That means software comes before anything else, so the skills block sits right under the summary with the accounting platform, the payroll system and the bank feeds you use. The next question is volume: how many clients or transactions you keep moving each month without falling behind. The experience slots ask for exactly that.

Fill each bracket with your own numbers and delete the lines you cannot support. A firm with many small clients and a single business hiring its own bookkeeper read the same layout differently, so the guide explains how to describe a client portfolio and how to describe one company's books in depth.

Software certifications get a separate block below experience. They are a tiebreaker rather than a filter in bookkeeping, so they sit where a reader finds them without crowding out your work. A finished version of this layout is the bookkeeper resume example.

How to fill in each section

  1. Summary: scope, platform, deadline you keep

Say up front whether you keep one company's books or a portfolio, because a firm and a single business are hiring for different strengths. Name the industries; a construction owner wants someone who knows retainage and job costing, while a restaurant wants tips and daily sales. Then list the cycle you run end to end and the platform it runs in. Close on the reliability an owner pays for: books reconciled by a fixed day, filings never late.

  2. Skills: the platform first, then the cycle

Bookkeeping postings often name one platform and one payroll provider, so list those exactly as written, including *Online* or *Desktop* for QuickBooks. Add receipt capture and bill pay tools, which owners increasingly expect. In the second line, write the tasks you do without supervision; a full-charge posting is looking for every one of payables, receivables, payroll, reconciliations and the close. Leave off advanced accounting work you have not done, since tax prep and audit belong to the CPA.

  3. Experience: files, transactions, filings on time

Give the scale an owner can picture: the number of client files, the revenue range of those businesses, transactions reconciled per month, employees on payroll, bills processed. Then show the routine kept: filings without penalty, reconciliations finished by a set day. Cleanup and catch-up projects deserve their own bullet with the months recovered and the time it took. If you freelance, describe clients by industry and size instead of by name.

  4. Certifications: current versions only

Platform certifications expire or need yearly renewal, so give the year and keep only active ones. A ProAdvisor badge matters most when you are applying to firms that are Intuit partners; Xero certification matters to firms built on Xero. A general credential such as the AIPB Certified Bookkeeper signals depth beyond one product. If you hold none, remove the section rather than listing courses in progress here; put those under education.

  5. Education: certificate or degree, one line

Most bookkeeping roles weigh experience over schooling, so this block stays short. List an accounting certificate, an associate degree or relevant coursework with the year. If you are studying toward an accounting degree, write the expected completion date; it tells a firm you may grow into staff accountant work. High school can go once you have any post-secondary training or two years in the job.

Questions about the bookkeeper resume template

How do I describe a freelance bookkeeping practice in this template?

Use your business name as the employer and Owner or Bookkeeper as the title. Count the clients, group them by industry, and give the transaction volume you reconcile monthly. Keep client names off the page; a line such as nine retail and trades businesses says enough.

Should a bookkeeper put payroll on the resume if it was only for a few clients?

Yes. Payroll is a separate skill that many small businesses specifically need, and errors there are the most visible ones. Give the number of employees and the pay frequency, and mention any quarterly or year-end payroll filings you handled.

What do I put in the experience section if I have only done bookkeeping for a family business?

Treat it as a job: name the business, give the period, and describe the books you kept with real volume. Family work counts when the tasks are real. Add a platform certification to show your skills against an outside standard.

When should a bookkeeper switch to the accountant template?

When your work moves past transactions into accruals, closes for multiple entities, and audit or financial statement preparation, and especially once you have an accounting degree. The accountant resume template puts licensure and standards higher for that reason.

Is it free?

Yes. The Word files and the Google Docs copy are free to download, edit and use for any application. There is no signup and no email.

Will it read correctly in an applicant tracking system?

The layout is one column with standard headings and real text: no tables, text boxes, icons, columns or images, which are the parts parsers most often misread. Keep it that way as you edit.

Word or Google Docs?

Use whichever you edit in. The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, Pages and LibreOffice. The Google Docs link asks you to make a copy in your own Drive; the original stays blank for the next person. Send the posting the format it asks for, usually .docx or PDF.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
