Before a nurse recruiter reads anything about your care, they verify that you can legally work on their unit: an active RN license in their state, or a compact license that covers it, and the life support and specialty certifications the unit requires. This template places Licenses and Certifications as the first block under your name, above the summary, so that check takes a glance. Each line prompts for an expiry date, because an expired BLS card is a common reason an application stalls.

The summary then states your specialty and setting. Every experience heading carries the unit, and the meta line its bed count, while the bullets ask for patient ratio, acuity, quality measures and leadership such as charge shifts or precepting. Skills follow, grouped as clinical, systems and patient care, and education sits last with the degree and school.

Fill each bracket with your own detail and delete lines you cannot support. New graduates can use the same layout with clinical rotations in the experience slots. To see it completed by a step-down nurse, open the registered nurse resume example.

How to fill in each section

  1. Licenses and Certifications: before the summary

Most templates put credentials near the bottom; nursing reverses that because licensure is a legal condition of hire. Write the state and whether the license is compact. Add the license number only if the application asks for it. Give expiry months for BLS, ACLS and PALS so the recruiter does not have to ask. Specialty certifications get their own line. Travel nurses holding several state licenses can list them together on one line, separated by commas.

  2. Summary: specialty, setting, ratio

Three facts orient a nurse manager immediately: the specialty, the type of facility and the ratio you carry. Put them in the first sentence. The second sentence names a clinical strength precisely: *sepsis recognition*, *fresh open-heart patients*, *high-risk antepartum*. The third names the unit and shift in the posting. Rewrite it whenever you apply across specialties; a summary written for the ED will not land on a mother-baby unit.

  3. Experience: unit, ratio, measures

Head every job with the unit and hospital, and put the bed count in the meta line. Bullets then answer what a charge nurse would ask about you: how many patients, how sick, and what you are trusted with. Quality measures belong here because units are judged on them; say which one moved and what you did. If a result came from a committee, credit the committee and describe your part. Charge shifts, precepting and rapid response all count as leadership.

  4. Skills: clinical, systems, people

Use the posting's terms for clinical skills. A cardiac unit looks for telemetry and titration; a surgical unit looks for post-op care and wound management. Name the charting system and medication cabinet you have used, since orientation is shorter when they match. The third line covers handoffs and patient education. Keep the section to three lines; your experience bullets already show most of what you can do.

  5. Education: degree and school, last

Degree, school and graduation year on one line. Many hospitals prefer or require a BSN, so if you hold an ADN and are enrolled in a bridge program, add it with an expected date. New graduates can mention honors or a capstone unit here and keep rotations in experience. Experienced nurses do not need a GPA or coursework on the page.

Questions about the registered nurse resume template

Why does this template put licenses above the summary?

A nurse recruiter's first task is confirming you hold an active license valid in their state and the certifications the unit requires. With that block first, verification happens at a glance and the rest of the page is read for fit. Your credentials also appear in the headline under your name.

Should I include my nursing license number?

Only if the application form asks for it. Recruiters verify licenses through the state board or Nursys by name, so the state and compact status are enough on the resume itself. Leaving the number off also keeps it out of every file you send.

How do I change specialties, for example from med-surg to ICU?

Open your bullets with the parts of your current work closest to the new unit: drips, unstable patients, rapid responses, codes. Add any certification or course you have finished toward the new specialty to the licenses block. Say in the summary which unit you are moving to and why you are ready for it.

How do travel nurses use this template?

Give each assignment its own heading, or group short contracts under the agency, each with facility, unit and length. List every active state license in the first block. Travel recruiters care most about how quickly you orient, so name the charting systems you have worked in across facilities.

Is it free?

Yes. The Word files and the Google Docs copy are free to download, edit and use for any application. There is no signup and no email.

Will it read correctly in an applicant tracking system?

The layout is one column with standard headings and real text: no tables, text boxes, icons, columns or images, which are the parts parsers most often misread. Keep it that way as you edit.

Word or Google Docs?

Use whichever you edit in. The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, Pages and LibreOffice. The Google Docs link asks you to make a copy in your own Drive; the original stays blank for the next person. Send the posting the format it asks for, usually .docx or PDF.
