A program manager is judged on altitude. The hiring director reading your resume wants to see programs, not tasks: a goal that spanned several teams or functions, the money and dependencies involved, and what the business got when it landed. That is why this template puts experience straight after the summary and gives each role room for four program-level bullets. Skills and certifications follow, because at this level they confirm what the bullets already show.

Each bracket asks for something you can count: teams, functions, workstreams, budget, launch date held, customers moved, cost removed. Fill in the ones you can defend in an interview and remove the rest. Two pages are normal for a long career here; just make sure page one carries the summary and your latest program.

Technical and business program roles share this layout but not this vocabulary. The guide shows how to pick one framing per application. See the program manager resume example for the template filled in by a realistic candidate.

How to fill in each section

  1. Summary: one program, one outcome, one habit

Start with your years and the domain, then describe the largest program you have led in a single sentence: what it was for, how many functions it crossed, and that it landed. Close with how you run programs, described concretely, such as a dependency review every Tuesday. Decide here whether this application is technical or business-facing and use that posting's words throughout; a summary that tries to be both reads as neither.

  2. Experience: breadth, dependencies, business result

A program bullet names more than one team. Count functions, workstreams and projects, then say what connected them and what the company gained: revenue from the launch, cost removed, customers migrated, a regulatory approval. Dependencies are the heart of the job, so give one bullet to a dependency or risk you saw early and what you did about it. Be exact about budget ownership; *tracked* and *owned* are different claims.

  3. Skills: governance with substance, domain you know

List the practices you run, but make them concrete; *decision log reviewed weekly with the VP* beats *governance*. The domain line is where a technical program manager shows system knowledge and a business program manager shows the regulated or commercial context they work in. Name tools only when the posting names them, since program leaders are rarely hired for a tool.

  4. Certifications: program level first

Few people hold the PgMP, and it speaks directly to coordinating several projects at once, so it goes first when you have it. SAFe credentials matter to companies that run release trains. Domain certifications, such as regulatory affairs or security, can carry more weight than any project credential when the posting is in that field. Keep the year on each.

  5. Education: field matters for technical roles

For technical program roles, an engineering or computer science degree supports the claim that you understand the systems, so keep the field visible. For business programs, an MBA belongs here and nothing more needs saying. Senior candidates can drop graduation years. Put education on page two if the resume runs long; nobody hires a program manager for the school line.

Questions about the program manager resume template

How do I show program scope if my title was project manager?

Describe the work at program level where it was true: the several projects you coordinated, the teams involved, the shared goal. Keep your actual title in the heading and let the bullets show the scope. The project manager resume template suits you better if most entries are single projects.

What should a technical program manager change in this template?

Use the domain skills line for architecture and platforms you understand, and add a bullet about a technical trade-off you facilitated with engineering leads, such as sequencing a migration. Replace business outcomes with delivery and reliability measures where those are what the team is judged on.

Is two pages fine for a program manager resume?

Yes, once you have eight or more years. Keep page one for the summary and the two most recent roles, and put earlier roles, certifications and education on page two. Below that experience level, cut to one page.

How do I write about a program that was cancelled?

Write about what you did and what the organization learned or saved. Recommending a stop based on evidence is a program management result. Say what the evidence was and what the decision protected, such as budget redirected to a stronger initiative.

Is it free?

Yes. The Word files and the Google Docs copy are free to download, edit and use for any application. There is no signup and no email.

Will it read correctly in an applicant tracking system?

The layout is one column with standard headings and real text: no tables, text boxes, icons, columns or images, which are the parts parsers most often misread. Keep it that way as you edit.

Word or Google Docs?

Use whichever you edit in. The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, Pages and LibreOffice. The Google Docs link asks you to make a copy in your own Drive; the original stays blank for the next person. Send the posting the format it asks for, usually .docx or PDF.
