Hiring for web developer jobs usually starts with a click. The person screening opens one of your sites before reading much else, checks that it loads quickly and works on a phone, and only then goes back to the page to see what you did on it. So this template puts a short Live Sites block right after the skills, above your work history, instead of hiding links in the header or at the end.

The skills block comes first because web roles vary so much in stack. A posting may want WordPress and PHP, or Next.js and a headless CMS, or Laravel and Vue, and the reader wants to know which camp you belong to before anything else. Experience follows, with bullet slots that ask for what launched, how it performed and what it changed for the site's owner. Education closes the page in one line, since many web developers come through bootcamps or teach themselves.

Replace each bracketed prompt with your own facts and delete any slot you cannot back up. The web developer resume example shows a finished version of this layout.

How to fill in each section

  1. Summary: stack, setting, the kind of site

Open with the stack you are hired on and the setting you work in, because agency, in-house and freelance web work are judged differently. An agency reader wants proof you can carry several client builds at once; an in-house team wants someone who will look after one site for years. Name the type of site you know best (stores, content sites, portals) and finish with what you want next, phrased in the posting's own terms. The Live Sites block does the persuading.

  2. Skills: three short lines a non-developer can scan

Split the list into front end, back end and CMS, and the tooling you use to ship. The first screen is often done by someone who is not a developer, matching words from the job ad, so write platform names the way their makers do: WordPress, Shopify, Next.js. If the posting asks for a CMS you have not used, list the closest one you know well rather than padding the line. Drop older libraries unless the job involves maintaining older sites.

  3. Live Sites: two or three links that still work

Choose sites that are still live and still look the way you left them; clients redesign, and a link to someone else's newer build works against you. For each, say what you did, because a reader cannot tell from the page whether you wrote the theme or changed a banner. Add one measured result where you have it. If your best work is behind a login, link a short case study with screenshots instead. Test every URL on a phone the day you apply.

  4. Experience: launches, speed, and what the owner gained

Web developers have unusually concrete numbers to hand: sites launched, weeks from sign-off to go-live, Core Web Vitals before and after, form submissions, orders, pages moved in a migration. Use them. Each bullet slot asks for what you built, the stack, and the change for the business that paid for it. Agency developers can group small builds into one line (N sites in a year) and give the strongest one its own bullet. Mention hosting and deploy duties; teams value developers who can release their own work.

  5. Education: one line, any route

Write the degree, bootcamp or certificate, the school and the year on a single line at the bottom. A computer science degree is welcome but rarely required for web roles; a bootcamp or self-taught path is common and needs no apology. Leave out coursework once you have paid work, and name only the single most relevant online certificate.

Questions about the web developer resume template

Should my portfolio link go in the header or in the Live Sites section?

Both, if you have a portfolio site. Put the portfolio URL beside your email so it is visible at a glance, and use Live Sites for the two or three individual builds you want discussed. If you have no portfolio site, the Live Sites lines are your portfolio.

How do I list freelance web work on this template?

Treat your freelance business as one job: your trading name or Freelance Web Developer as the heading, the dates you were active, and bullets that group clients by type. Name a client only with permission. Repeat clients and referrals are worth a line, because they show work that held up after launch.

What if my sites were built with page builders like Elementor or Squarespace?

List them honestly and show where you went beyond the builder: custom code, integrations, performance fixes or a migration. In-house postings often ask for hand-written HTML, CSS and JavaScript, so lead with any project that shows those, even a small one.

Is this template right if I mostly build interfaces in React?

If your work stops at the browser and centers on components and state, the front-end developer resume template puts more weight on that. Use this one when you also handle the server, the CMS or hosting.

Is it free?

Yes. The Word files and the Google Docs copy are free to download, edit and use for any application. There is no signup and no email.

Will it read correctly in an applicant tracking system?

The layout is one column with standard headings and real text: no tables, text boxes, icons, columns or images, which are the parts parsers most often misread. Keep it that way as you edit.

Word or Google Docs?

Use whichever you edit in. The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, Pages and LibreOffice. The Google Docs link asks you to make a copy in your own Drive; the original stays blank for the next person. Send the posting the format it asks for, usually .docx or PDF.

Every application goes out fitting the job.
