Business development is judged on what did not exist before you arrived: a channel partner, a new region, a customer segment nobody at the company had sold to. The first reader of this resume, usually a revenue or partnerships leader, looks for that newness and for honesty about attribution, since a business developer often sources revenue that someone else closes. The prompts here keep the two apart. Every revenue slot asks whether the figure is sourced pipeline, influenced revenue or deals you closed yourself.

The order is summary, experience, a Partnerships and Markets Opened section, education, then skills. The middle section lists each partnership or market entry on one line, with the year it started and what it has produced, so a reader can count your openings at a glance. Education sits above skills because many business development postings ask for a business degree or an MBA, and the tools in this field matter less than the deals.

Titles in this area cover partnerships, outbound prospecting and market expansion, so delete prompts that do not fit your version of the job. The business development manager resume example shows a completed page.

How to fill in each section

  1. Summary: what you open, and for whom

Say which kind of business development you do in the first clause, because partnerships, outbound and market entry are hired from different backgrounds. Give one opening a reader can picture: a channel built from nothing, a first customer in a new country, a segment the sales team now sells to every quarter. End with the market the posting wants opened. Skip the word *strategic*; your partnerships list shows whether the work was.

  2. Experience: attribution you can defend

The quickest way to lose a business development interview is to claim revenue the account executives closed. Each revenue prompt asks you to label it: sourced, influenced, or closed by you. Name the colleagues who carried the deal over the line by function, because cross-team work is part of the job. Include one bullet on research or a pilot that changed a decision, even if the outcome was to stay out of a market; sound judgment about where not to go is valued.

  3. Partnerships and Markets Opened: a count with dates

One line per opening, newest first, with the start year and the result so far. Describe confidential partners by type and size, such as *regional payroll provider* or *national distributor*. Include a partnership that ended if you can say what it produced and why it stopped. Three to five lines are plenty; if you have more, keep the ones closest to the posting's market.

  4. Education: above skills, for a reason

Many business development postings name a degree, and some at larger companies prefer an MBA, so education sits higher here than in most sales templates. Add the concentration or a relevant capstone, such as a market entry study, when it supports the posting. If you have no degree, move this section below skills and let the partnerships list carry the page.

  5. Skills: deal craft and market analysis

Group skills into the deal side and the research side, since good business developers do both. Name the partner management or account mapping tool you use if the company runs a partner program; teams setting one up want someone who has worked inside one. A spreadsheet model you built for market sizing is worth naming under Tools.

Questions about the business development manager resume template

How do I list revenue I sourced but did not close?

Label it as sourced pipeline or partner-sourced revenue, give the figure, and name the team that closed it. A reader trusts a clearly attributed number more than a larger, vague one, and the interview will test the difference anyway.

What if my partnerships are covered by a non-disclosure agreement?

Describe each by type, region and size, and give the result as a range or a share of company revenue if exact figures are confidential. Do not name a partner on the page unless the partnership has been announced publicly.

Can I move into business development from account management?

Yes, if you can show you started something. Look for an upsell into a new department, a referral program you set up, or a customer who introduced you to a partner. Put those first in the experience slot and leave routine renewals for the last bullet.

Should a business development manager resume be one or two pages?

One page until you have several roles with distinct openings to list. Two pages suit people with long partnership careers, provided the second page holds results rather than older job duties.

Is it free?

Yes. The Word files and the Google Docs copy are free to download, edit and use for any application. There is no signup and no email.

Will it read correctly in an applicant tracking system?

The layout is one column with standard headings and real text: no tables, text boxes, icons, columns or images, which are the parts parsers most often misread. Keep it that way as you edit.

Word or Google Docs?

Use whichever you edit in. The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, Pages and LibreOffice. The Google Docs link asks you to make a copy in your own Drive; the original stays blank for the next person. Send the posting the format it asks for, usually .docx or PDF.
