This template follows the order a hiring board and a background investigator work through a sworn applicant. The first question is whether you can be put on the street without a new academy, so a Certification and Training block sits right under the summary instead of at the end. Experience comes next, with each job slot asking for the agency, its size, your beat or unit and the shift, because a board weighs six years in a 15-officer village differently from six years in a city precinct.

Each bracketed line names the fact a board expects in that spot. Write yours over it and remove what does not apply; a recruit still at the academy keeps the training block and fills one experience slot with prior civilian or military work. The single column, plain headings and month-and-year dates make the page easy to check line by line against your personal history statement, which is exactly how it will be read.

The police officer resume example shows the same layout completed for a lateral officer with a field training assignment.

How to fill in each section

  1. Summary: sworn years, agency size, one specialty

Three sentences carry it. Open with how long you have been sworn and the size and type of the department, since a board calibrates everything else against that. Give your certification state and year in the second, together with the one specialty that sets you apart. The third says whether you are applying as a lateral or an entry candidate and for what kind of agency. Skip words about courage or service; the interview panel will form its own view of those.

  2. Certification and Training: course, hours, issuer, year

Write the certificate under its exact state name, because the investigator verifies it with that commission. Then list each course on its own line with the hours and the year, grouped as basic, specialty, instructor and medical when the list runs long. Instructor credentials go first within their group, since an agency short of firearms or defensive tactics trainers reads them as a cost it no longer has to pay. Leave out expired certificates unless you note the renewal date.

  3. Experience: agency, beat, call volume, outcome

Use the department's full legal name and the unit, then put the shift and beat in the date line. Each bullet slot asks for how busy you were, the kind of work you handled and a result someone can confirm from department records. Pull call counts from your CAD history rather than estimating. A prior job in corrections or the military police gets its own entry with two or three bullets; unrelated civilian work can shrink to one line so the dates still connect.

  4. Skills: what you can do on a shift, then the systems

Postings for patrol officers name the same handful of abilities, so list the ones you have actually used: report writing, de-escalation, crash work, evidence handling. A second line names the systems you work in every day, which matters most to a lateral, since a department using the same records system needs less time to get you solo. Add a language only at the level you could use on a call.

  5. Education and service: degree, then military record

Put your degree on one line with the year. Many departments pay incentive pay for college credit, so list an associate degree or credit hours toward one if that is where you are. Military service goes here when it is not already in Experience, with branch, specialty and years. Your high school diploma only needs a line if it is your highest education and the posting asks for it.

Questions about the police officer resume template

Should a police officer resume list arrest numbers?

Only with context, and never as the headline result. A total on its own invites the question of how many arrests held up. Pair any count with what it led to, such as cases accepted for charging, and give equal space to calls resolved without an arrest, which boards now look for.

How do I fill this template if I am still in the academy?

Keep the Certification and Training block and write the academy name, the hours completed so far and the expected graduation month. Use the experience slots for your last two jobs, and choose bullets that show shift work, conflict handling or responsibility for money or people. A security role or a dispatch job fits naturally; the security guard resume example shows how that work reads.

Can the resume be two pages?

Yes, when the second page holds verified training and assignments. Officers with several specialty courses and collateral duties often need it. Keep the first page complete on its own: summary, certification, current agency and the strongest bullets, in case a panel member reads no further.

Should I include my badge number or department email?

No. Use a personal email and phone so the department does not see your job search through its own systems, and so recruiters can still reach you if you leave. The badge number is not needed on a resume; the background packet asks for anything the investigator requires.

Is it free?

Yes. The Word files and the Google Docs copy are free to download, edit and use for any application. There is no signup and no email.

Will it read correctly in an applicant tracking system?

The layout is one column with standard headings and real text: no tables, text boxes, icons, columns or images, which are the parts parsers most often misread. Keep it that way as you edit.

Word or Google Docs?

Use whichever you edit in. The Word file opens in Microsoft Word, Pages and LibreOffice. The Google Docs link asks you to make a copy in your own Drive; the original stays blank for the next person. Send the posting the format it asks for, usually .docx or PDF.
